He joined International SOS in 2008 as Regional Medical Director based in Jakarta, Indonesia. Prior to joining International SOS Dr Jute was employed by an international mining company in 2003 as a health services manager to remote mining projects based in Mali and Tanzania. During this period he managed all aspects of remote health care delivery including Public and Occupational Health.
Dr Jute is a South African citizen and has more than 25 years of professional experience. He completed his Masters in Family Medicine from University of Orange Free State, South Africa in 2000 and attained postgraduate qualifications in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene and Travel Medicine. She is the CMO for De Beers Consolidated Mining and the volunteer Palliative Care doctor at a HIV/AIDS Hospice for homeless people in Hillbrow.

Dr Brink’s involvement in travel medicine began in 2004 as President, and subsequent to that he was appointed as the Project Manager for the Society.
He is the Past Chairman of the Destination Communities Special Interest Group of the ISTM, and a member of the Education Committee.

Dr Meintjes is presently employed at the Tygerberg Academic Hospital and the Facility of Medicine and Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University.
He is a Specialist Consultant in Occupational Medicine, Head of the Unit for Infection Prevention and Control as well as the programme co-ordinator of all postgraduate programmes in Underwater Medicine and Hyperbaric Medicine.
Practical experience: He was employed in the military for 11 years and was responsible for the medical support for the SA Navy divers and submariners. After this he got involved in the international commercial diving sector, doing approximately 800 diving medical examinations per year. Dr Meintjes was the medical officer on site during the 270m deep dive in 2005, where Dave Shaw lost his life (and spent more than 9 hours in the chamber saving the lives of his companions).

Dr Weiss has been the editor of S A Dermatology Review for the last 14 years He has published widely in both local and international peer-reviewed journals and is on the South African National Guidelines Committees for Atopic eczema, Acne, Psoriasis and the Psoriasis biologics review committee.
Dr Weiss serves on a number of medical advisory boards to multinational companies.

Theunis Avenant heads the Department of Paediatrics at Kalafong Provincial Tertiary Hospital, a teaching hospital of the University of Pretoria, where he also acts as assistant to the Dean. He is a registered sub-specialist in Paediatric Infectious Diseases and regularly lectures at conferences on diverse topics in this field. In addition to serving on several University and Hospital committees has served on the executive committees of the South African Paediatric Association (SAPA) and the Southern African Society of Paediatric Infectious Diseases. Other interests include travel medicine, undergraduate and postgraduate medical training.
Lee Baker qualified as a pharmacist at Witwatersrand College for Advanced Technical Education in 1975 and has worked as a medicine information pharmacist for the past 33 years and is owner of the Amayeza Info Centre.
She is a member of the South African Malaria Elimination Committee (SAMEC) that is working towards eliminating malaria in South Africa and is involved in compiling the current malaria guidelines on treatment and prevention. She is the South African representative and chairperson for the Pharmacy Professional Group of ISTM and is President of the SASTM. She is the editor of two books; Beyond Childhood Vaccinationand Guide to the Practice of Travel Medicine in South Africaand co-editor of The Older Traveller – a guide for the health professional.

Johan Marais is the C.E.O of The African Snakebite Institute and is affiliated with the University of the Witwatersrand. His interest is venomous snakes and snakebite. He lectures widely on snakes of Africa as well as snake handling and first aid in snake bite.

Dr Jack Meintjes
Dr Meintjes is presently employed at the Tygerberg Academic Hospital and the Facility of Medicine and Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University.
He is a Specialist Consultant in Occupational Medicine, Head of the Unit for Infection Prevention and Control as well as the programme co-ordinator of all postgraduate programmes in Underwater Medicine and Hyperbaric Medicine.
Practical experience: He was employed in the military for 11 years and was responsible for the medical support for the SA Navy divers and submariners. After this he got involved in the international commercial diving sector, doing approximately 800 diving medical examinations per year. Dr Meintjes was the medical officer on site during the 270m deep dive in 2005, where Dave Shaw lost his life (and spent more than 9 hours in the chamber saving the lives of his companions).

Salim Parker is a general practitioner based in Cape Town and immediate Past-President of the South African Society of Travel Medicine. He is the co-director of the Cape Town GeoSentinel site and currently serves on the Liaison Committee of the International Society of Travel Medicine (ISTM) as well as on the editorial board of the Journal of Travel Medicine. In collaboration with the Global Centre for Mass Gathering Medicine, he is involved in Hajj pilgrimage related research. Original research has been presented at the last five ISTM conferences. He has authored book chapters, including co-authoring the 2018 Hajj chapter in the CDC Health Information for International Travel.

Mary was a founder member of SASTM and the SASTM course while she was on the full-time staff of the University of the Witwatersrand in 2000. She is now an independent consultant in occupational, public health and travel medicine. During her career, she has worked in diverse positions managing health services at local, provincial and national levels, teaching, and overseeing research in her fields of interest. Mary holds an academic appointment as honorary professor in public health medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand. Mary is currently a Member of the Board of ICOH. She is also a member of the WHO advisory group for the International Health Regulations.

The following requirements are applicable for admission on the Travel Medicine Course:
If these criteria are not met your application will not be successful.
Target group:
The course is aimed at licensed health care practitioners who are already involved in travel medicine or who intend to set up practice in travel health care.
Minimum operational requirements:
Please refer to Starting a Clinic on the Menu for the minimum operational requirements for establishing a Travel Medicine Clinic.
Other requirements:
SASTM has the following requirements for the operation of Travel Medicine Clinics and these requirements are applicable for admission to the course:
Individuals who practice travel medicine should be licensed health-care practitioners (e.g. a registered nurse and a medical practitioner working collaboratively) with a background in family practice, internal medicine, paediatrics, public health or infectious diseases.
A medical practitioner, suitably qualified in travel medicine and who has a yellow fever license, must be in overall charge of a Travel Medicine Clinic.
The medical practitioner will assume medico-legal responsibility for and oversee the entire operation of the Travel Medicine Clinic.
Whereas ideally the medical practitioner in overall charge of the Travel Medicine Clinic should be on site at all times, he/she must be at least locally available to attend to any matters that arise during operation of the Travel Medicine Clinic.
The knowledge base is broad, and it is for this reason that a Travel Medicine Clinic must be supervised by a health-care professional as indicated above. The core knowledge includes a basic knowledge and understanding of the following:
- Geography
- Global distribution, epidemiology, mode of transmission, prevention and, if appropriate, self-treatment of travel-associated infectious diseases.
- Immunology and the immune system.
- Indications, contraindications, pharmacology, drug interactions and adverse events of available travel-related drugs and vaccines.
- Preventions and management of non-infectious disease risks for travellers.
- Aside from the skills required to practice as a health care professional, the following skills are mandatory for the travel medicine practitioner:
- The ability to undertake a basic health assessment.
- Evaluation of any underlying health problems.
The assessment of the health of the traveller is an important aspect of the pre-travel consultation. This would often necessitate examination of the traveller, evaluation of underlying or concurrent chronic conditions, general health and providing information to obtain optimal control of chronic illness.
- Individual risk assessment to determine the traveller's health risks.
- Risk reduction strategies.
- Recognition of any travel-related illness.
- All post-travel consultations should be managed by a medical practitioner
- Timely medical assessment for the management of travel-related illness

You will be given a file containing the speaker's handouts when you register on site on the first day.
PLEASE make every effort to STUDY the material as soon as you receive it. It is a large volume of work to cover and you will NOT be able to absorb and know it all if you only start at the time of the course.
You MUST know the content of the WHO Guideline. Be sure you are familiar with the vaccines and malaria prophylactics covered.
Remember that you will be writing an MCQ exam ON ARRIVAL on the first day of the course, which counts towards your total pass mark. This exam as well as the final (last day) exam is compulsory.
Certificate of Competence and Yellow Fever License
CERTIFICATE
A Certificate of Competence will be issued by the University of Witwatersrand to each student on successful completion of the course.
YELLOW FEVER LICENCE
Successful completion of the Travel Medicine Course is required by the Department of Health for the issuing of a Yellow Fever licence. Details on how to obtain your license will be provided to you on the course.

Procedure following Registration:
Once your On-line application has been received, you will receive confirmation that it has been received by the SASTM office.
Your application is then processed and submitted to the University of the Witwatersrand for approval. Please note: this can take several weeks.
Once approval has been received from the University of the Witwatersrand, the SASTM office will invoice you electronically.
Once you have made payment and sent confirmation to the SASTM office your Course Material will be couriered to you. The Course Material is couriered via the South African Post Office, Counter to Counter service. (This is not applicable to applicants outside the borders of South Africa. In this case the Course Material is couriered directly to you).
