Janette Reader

Janette obtained her BSc Honours, MSc and PhD degree in Biochemistry from the University of Pretoria, focussing on a variety of aspects including proteomics, transcriptomics, drug discovery and development as well as phenotypic assay development on the human malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum. Currently she is an research focussed academic lecturer at the University of Pretoria and project manager for the African Academy of Sciences Gates Foundation Grand Challenges project and the Medicines for Malaria Venture project.

She is an infectious disease molecular biologist with more than 10 years’ experience in the field of malaria research, with highly cited published papers and a strong track record of research projects. She has been particularly interested in the transmissible stages of the parasite with her current main focus transmission-blocking drug development and mode-of-action and target investigation. She is currently one of few internationally recognised individuals with skills and expertise to produce transmissible forms of malaria parasites routinely to stage-stratify transmissible forms of malaria parasites to identify stage-specific antimalarial compounds.
