Lucille Blumberg

Professor Lucille Blumberg is an infectious diseases and clinical microbiology specialist at 'Right to Care'. She has honorary appointments at the National institute for Communicable Diseases and the Universities of Stellenbosch and Pretoria (Faculty of Veterinary Science).
Her special interests are in tropical diseases, travel medicine, malaria, the viral
haemorrhagic fevers, rabies and One Health.
She is a member of a number of International and South African expert Groups including the National Rabies Advisory Group and the National Malaria Advisory Group.

Dr Pieton is a Consultant in Infectious Diseases at the Rosebank Clinic and for the Department of Health at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.

Steven Miller

Dr Miller is a consultant in Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases in private practice in Johannesburg.
He is the member of the microbiology, virology and cell culture team at Lancet Laboratories.
Dr Miller is a graduate of the Witwatersrand Medical School, Johannesburg.

Salim Parker

Salim Parker is a general practitioner based in Cape Town and immediate Past-President of the South African Society of Travel Medicine. He is the co-director of the Cape Town GeoSentinel site and currently serves on the Liaison Committee of the International Society of Travel Medicine (ISTM) as well as on the editorial board of the Journal of Travel Medicine. In collaboration with the Global Centre for Mass Gathering Medicine, he is involved in Hajj pilgrimage related research. Original research has been presented at the last five ISTM conferences. He has authored book chapters, including co-authoring the 2018 Hajj chapter in the CDC Health Information for International Travel.

Max Winkler

Max Winkler graduated from the University of Cape Town and is a general practitioner at the Hout Bay Family Medical Centre in Hout Bay, Cape Town, South Africa, offering travel medicine related advice to travellers in the travel clinic as well as general clinical duties. His fields of interest include infectious diseases, wilderness medicine and occupational health. Max became President of SASTM at the October 2022 AGM held in Skukuza, Kruger National Park.

Fanie Jute

Dr Fanie Jute is currently employed as Regional Medical Director Africa with International SOS based in Johannesburg, South Africa. He joined International SOS in 2008 as Regional Medical Director based in Jakarta, Indonesia and was subsequently re-assigned to Dubai, UAE until August 2018. Prior to joining International SOS, Dr Jute was employed by an international mining company in 2003 as a health services manager to remote mining projects based in Mali and Tanzania. During this period he managed all aspects of remote health care delivery including Public and Occupational Health.

Dr Jute is a South African citizen with 30 years of professional experience. He completed his Masters in Family Medicine from University of Orange Free State, South Africa in 2000 and attained postgraduate qualifications in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene and Travel Medicine. He is a member of various professional bodies including the South African Society of Travel Medicine, International Society of Travel Medicine and South African Academy of Family Practice/Primary Care.

Marius Van Aswegen

Dr Marius van Aswegen is an Industrial Psychologist by profession, specialising in Expatriate Psychology. He is based in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Marius provides professional consulting services in the following areas:
 Cross-cultural sensitivity and conflict resolution
 International assignee/expatriate selection, preparation and management
 Marius is contracted with International SOS and Inhemaco in providing psychological counseling support to international assignees and their families relating to trauma situations.

 He is a member of the International Society of Travel Medicine (ISTM) Interest Group for Traveller Psychological Health.
Among others, the specific focus area of the Interest Group is the provision of relevant and research-based solutions for international mental health service providers in managing the new world of work and living during and post the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Mary was a founder member of SASTM and the SASTM course while she was on the full-time staff of the University of the Witwatersrand in 2000. She is now an independent consultant in occupational, public health and travel medicine. During her career, she has worked in diverse positions managing health services at local, provincial and national levels, teaching, and overseeing research in her fields of interest. Mary holds an academic appointment as honorary professor in public health medicine at the University of the Witwatersrand. Mary is currently a Member of the Board of ICOH. She is also a member of the WHO advisory group for the International Health Regulations.

Johan Marais

Johan Marais is the C.E.O of The African Snakebite Institute and is affiliated with the University of the Witwatersrand. His interest is venomous snakes and snakebite. He lectures widely on snakes of Africa as well as snake handling and first aid in snake bite.

He has two publications: A Complete Guide to snakes of Southern Africa and Snakes & Snakebite in Southern Africa.

Professor Parrish is Head of the department of Medicine, East London Hospital Complex at the Eastern Cape Department of Health. He is a specialist physician and epidemiologist, and is an expert on the topic of Evidence Based Medicine, having shepherded the National Essential Medicines List Committee (NEMLC) for many years, amongst other things.

Professor Theuns Avenant
Theunis Avenant heads the Department of Paediatrics at Kalafong Provincial Tertiary Hospital, a teaching hospital of the University of Pretoria, where he also acts as assistant to the Dean. He is a registered sub-specialist in Paediatric Infectious Diseases and regularly lectures at conferences on diverse topics in this field. In addition to serving on several University and Hospital committees has served on the executive committees of the South African Paediatric Association (SAPA) and the Southern African Society of Paediatric Infectious Diseases. Other interests include travel medicine, undergraduate and postgraduate medical training.

Rochelle Lee

Jack Meintjes

Dr Jack Meintjes
Dr Meintjes is presently employed at the Tygerberg Academic Hospital and the Facility of Medicine and Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University.
He is a Specialist Consultant in Occupational Medicine, Head of the Unit for Infection Prevention and Control as well as the programme co-ordinator of all postgraduate programmes in Underwater Medicine and Hyperbaric Medicine.

Practical experience: He was employed in the military for 11 years and was responsible for the medical support for the SA Navy divers and submariners. After this he got involved in the international commercial diving sector, doing approximately 800 diving medical examinations per year. Dr Meintjes was the medical officer on site during the 270m deep dive in 2005, where Dave Shaw lost his life (and spent more than 9 hours in the chamber saving the lives of his companions).

Lynda Steyn

Mrs Steyn studied pharmacy at the University of the Witwatersrand and graduated with a BPharm in 1993. She then worked in retail and hospital pharmacy in South Africa before moving to the United States in 1997, where she worked as a pharmacist for six years.
Upon returning to South Africa in 2003 she worked in retail and hospital pharmacies until joining Amayeza Info Services as a Medicine Information Pharmacist in 2015.
As part of medicine information, she writes articles for various medical journals and also does training for nurses, pharmacists and doctors in Vaccinology.
Mrs Steyn completed the SASTM Travel Medicine Course in 2019 with distinction and became a member of the SASTM Executive Committee in October 2021.

Jaishree Raman

Jaishree Raman heads the National Antimalarial Drug and Diagnostic Resistance Surveillance Programme at the National Institute for Communicable Diseases, and is affiliated to the Research Institute for Malaria at the University of Witwatersrand as well as the University of Pretoria’s Institute for Sustainable Malaria Control. Jaishree is a member of a number national and regional malaria experts groups, focussed on improving malaria case management practices across southern Africa, with the ultimate aim of eliminating this treatable and preventable disease from the region.

John Frean

John Frean is Head, Parasitology Reference Laboratory, Centre for Emerging, Zoonotic and Parasitic Diseases, National Institute for Communicable Diseases and is affiliated to the Research Institute for Malaria, School of Pathology, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand. He holds South African, United Kingdom and Australian qualifications in medicine, pathology (microbiology and parasitology), tropical and travel medicine. His areas of interest are clinical and diagnostic microbiology and tropical medicine, especially parasitic and zoonotic diseases.
